you ever go on a blind date and s/he asks you, “do you like to eat ethnic foods?” well, as a chinese gal, i’m often annoyed by this query because i’m chinese and i grew up eating chinese food so it’s not really ethnic to me! do you think “american” food is ethnic to parisians? the lusty lure of a mcdonald’s burger and fries overtakes a frenchman and he submits, eschewing his traditional foie gras and frites?
anyway, i’m going on a tour of asia today, at least gastronomically. for lunch, i’ll be traipsing over to “koreatown” in manhattan to meet my sister and mother for fresh made tofu in hot stone pots. dinner will be indian food at curry lane, the nickname for 6th street between 1st and 2nd avenue in downtown manhattan due to the numerous indian restaurants on that block.
given my proclivity for all things spicy (i don’t like food if it doesn’t bite me back), i’m afraid my intestines will be seared shut, cauterized by the scoville rating! but that’s OK since i fully expect to be the proud recipient of a colostomy bag by the time i’m 45. “ring of fire,” indeed.
