So, I totally watched the first 5 episodes of HBO’s new miniseries, Generation Kill, based on embedded Rolling Stone journalist Evan Wright’s book of the same name. Why is this even worth mentioning? After all, I watch a lot of tv shows (90% of them are news, 10% of them are people thinking they can dance) so who even cares?
Here’s why I’m telling you: it’s not even on tv yet, that’s why. My boss wanted to watch it, because her former-Marine-son-in-law (who is a very lovely guy, actually) is fairly heavily featured in both the book and the show, and she wanted to watch it now, so she made Dick Parsons send her advance DVDs. So we have them here in Maine, and we watched them. (Just as an fyi about how terrifyingly powerful my boss is, her son-in-law, whose name and likeness and words are in the actual show, was only shown the show in the company of HBO staff, and wasn’t permitted a copy of the DVDs. This boss lady? Dick Parsons’ secretary overnighted us the DVDs, along with his calling card. My job is really, really weird sometimes.
Anyhow, I like the show, and I’ll likely watch it in July when it’s actually on the television, even though it’s really weird knowing someone who is the real-life version of someone on a tv show. It would be like actually knowing John Adams, and then watching John Adams, and being all, “Dude, you totally do not sound like that at all.” and “Really? Did you really say that?” Also as we watched episode 5 tonight, I kept being all, “Jesus, how weird is this? That’s supposed to be YOU.” (He said it’s super weird, and he kind of hates it, because it’s really weird.)
Also I have it on very good authority from the above-mentioned son-in-law that Obama is still smoking.
